This study employs method of case study in Dusun Tanjung Sari, Desa Kupang, sub-district of Jabon, Regency of Sidoarjo. Samples were collected from 18 polyculturers of three commodities (black tiger prawn, milkfish, and seaweed) and 20 polyculturers of two commodities (black tiger prawn and milkfish) by means of proportional sampling. Variables to be investigated were type of commodity, treatment in the polyculture processes, stocking density, water quality, mangrove forest, social and economic institutions, investment and operational funds, production, quality and fertility of water, and financial gain. Results of the present study show that the three-commodity model of polyculture consists of capability to determine pond sites, pond preparation, maintenance, harvesting, and social and economic institutions. There are three supporting factors in determining pond sites, namely pond bottom soils, sources of freshwater and seawater and the presence of mangrove forest. Water quality is in agreement with standards of water quality for ponds with relatively high fertility.

Stocking densities for black tiger prawns and milkfish are not significantly different between two- and three-commodity polyculture. The stocking density for seaweed is 975 kgha -1 for three-commodity ponds. The presence of seaweed in the three-commodity polyculture ponds results in better water quality compared to the two-commodity polyculture ponds. Dissolved oxygen content is of 165 mgl -1, water clarity of 50,875 cm, NH 3 of 0.157 mgl -1, H 2 S of 0.025 mgl -1, NO 2 of 0.109 mgl -1, PO 4 -3 of 0.461 mgl -1, pH of 8.05, TOM of 38,635 mg -1 l, TSS of 176,418 mgl -1, alkalinity of 4.665 mgl -1, temperature of 32.965C, salinity of 32.5, BOD of 2.88 mgl -1 and Pb of 0.245 mgl -1. Production of black tiger prawns of 201.11 kgha -1 m -1 and milkfish of 1180,56 kgha -1 m -1 are higher than production of two-commodity polyculture ponds, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, it is shown that, for black tiger prawns, abundance of plankton within intestines are of 11,466 individuals for each liter, absolute growth is 23.93 g, fatness is 0.604114, survival of 53%, and average size of 34 animals for each kilogram.

Meanwhile, for milkfish, it is shown that abundance of plankton within intestines are of 69,845 individuals for each liter, absolute growth is 354.99 g, fatness is 0.814, survival rate of 95%, and average size of 4.25 animals for each kilogram. Financial profit of three-commodity polyculture amounts to Rp 20,717,628 per ha per culture season and two-commodity polyculture amounts to Rp 11,924,115 ha for each culture season. Budidaya polikultur terpadu dan sinergis saat ini banyak diteliti dan dikaji karena dapat meningkatkan kulitas air. Diintegrasikannya rumput laut (Gracilaria sp) kedalam kegiatan polikultur udang windu ( Penaeus monodon Fabrisius) dan ikan bandeng (Chanos-chanos Forskal) secara terpadu. Pada umumnya pembudidayaan secara tradisional selalu mengedepankan luas lahan, pasang surut, intercrop dan tanpa pemberian makanan tambahan sehingga makanan bagi komoditas yang dibudidayakan harus tersedia secara alami dalam jumlah yang cukup. Udang windu, ikan bandeng dan rumput laut secara biologis memiliki sifat–sifat yang dapat bersinergi sehingga budidaya polikultur semacam ini dapat dikembangkan karena merupakan salah satu bentuk budidaya polikultur yang ramah terhadap lingkungan.
